Fact Check: Old Forbes survey on ‘corrupt Asian countries’ resurfaces

A news clip is being widely shared on social media which claims that India has been declared as the most corrupt Asian country in the world.

The headline of the newspaper clip reads, “India is Asia’s most corrupt country in Forbes list.” The report further stated that Vietnam is second, Thailand third number and Pakistan declared as the fourth most corrupt country in Asia.”

The newspaper clip was shared with a caption that reads, “Under the leadership of respected Modi ji, India became the leader in corruption in Asia! It is moving ahead strongly on the path to becoming a world leader!”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is misleading. We found that the viral report is from 2017.

On searching with appropriate keywords, we found a report by ANI on September 1, 2017. The report suggested that a survey by Transparency International stated that India is the most corrupt country in Asia. The list was released by Forbes who said that when it comes to bribery then India had beaten Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan and Myanmar.

Business Standards had also published the report.

The report was also published by The Forbes on May 13, 2017.

The report stated that India has the highest bribery rate in Asia which is 69 per cent. The report further suggested that the respondents of the survey said that they have to pay a bribe to use five out of the six public services. However, prime minister Narendra Modi’s fight against corruption has made a mark: 53% of the people think he is doing it fairly or very well. It has also led to people feeling empowered, as 63% believe ordinary people can make a difference.
