A video is widely being shared on social media in which a journalist is seen being bullied by some people wearing face masks.
The video is shared with a caption claiming that it shows a Bangladeshi journalist being heckled by the citizens of the nation amid the unrest after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “भारत के जो लिब्रांडू पत्रकार बांग्लादेश के हालात पर ख़ुशी मना रहे हैं, उन्हें ज़रा शर्म आनी चाहिए! ख़ासकर रवीश कुमार जैसों को देखिए, बांग्लादेश में मीडिया वालों के साथ क्या बर्बर सुलूक हो रहा है। आखिरकार, यह सब देखकर आप लोग कैसे खुशी मना सकते हैं?” (English translation, “Those liberal journalists of India who are celebrating the situation in Bangladesh should be ashamed! Especially people like Ravish Kumar. Look at the brutal treatment being meted out to media persons in Bangladesh. After all, how can you people celebrate after seeing all this?”)
SouthCheck found the claim to be misleading. We found that the video is from New York and not Bangladesh.
On doing a Yandex Reverse Image Search, we found a screenshot of the image uploaded by a website with a caption that reads, “Somoy TV journo attacked during live.”
Taking a hint we searched with appropriate keywords and found the same video was uploaded by Samay TV on June 2, 2020. We found that the journalist’s name was Hasanuzzaman Saki, who works for Somoy TV. The report suggested that the protestors who were protesting in Times Square, New York misbehaved with him on June 1, 2020. Saki was covering the protest held against the death of George Floyd in police custody.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is not associated with Bangladesh.
