About SouthCheck

Who We Are

SouthCheck is an independent fact-checking and public interest journalism initiative based in South India. We aim to identify, verify, and expose false or misleading information circulating across digital platforms, mainstream media, and public discourse. By ensuring accurate, evidence-based content reaches audiences in English and major South Indian languages, we strive to strengthen information integrity and empower the public with trustworthy information.

What We Do

At the core of our work is rigorous fact-checking. We investigate widely circulated claims—ranging from political narratives and doctored visuals to communal rumours and viral hoaxes. Each fact-check is rooted in a transparent and methodical process, including:

In addition to fact-checking, we report on fast-moving developments in domains where misinformation is rampant—such as artificial intelligence, public health, and climate change. These stories go beyond verification to offer context-driven reporting that helps audiences make sense of emerging risks and complex challenges.

Why It Matters

In an age where misinformation spreads faster than facts, SouthCheck serves as a reliable and timely resource. We help people separate truth from falsehood, hold power to account, and fill critical gaps in public knowledge. Our work contributes to a healthier, more informed digital ecosystem.

Our Language Reach

We publish in English, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam, ensuring that reliable information is accessible across linguistic and regional divides. This multilingual approach allows us to serve communities that are often underrepresented in national fact-checking efforts.

Independence and Ethics

SouthCheck operates with full editorial independence. Our team adheres to internationally recognised standards of verification, transparency, and accountability. We do not promote political or commercial agendas. All our fact-checks are guided solely by the principles of accuracy, fairness, and public interest.

SouthCheck was established by NewsMeter, a Hyderabad-based digital news and fact-checking platform. However, SouthCheck is a non-profit platform independently run by a separate parent company, Swasthika Projects, with its own governance structure and board of directors.  All revenue generated is reinvested into our editorial work, capacity building, and expanding our multilingual fact-checking operations. We do not run paid campaigns, sponsored content, or engage in commercial promotions.

Our Editorial Structure

SouthCheck is led by trained journalists and researchers with expertise in investigative reporting, digital verification, data journalism, and multilingual storytelling. Our team brings a mix of regional insight and global best practices to every story.

SouthCheck and NewsMeter share a common editorial head, Dheeshma Puzhakkal, who oversees the daily editorial operations of both platforms. However, the writing teams are distinct. SouthCheck maintains a separate editorial team from NewsMeter, and for regional language fact-checks, we rely on a network of freelancers with expertise in digital verification and fact-checking.
