The West Bengal Assembly election will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29 to elect 294 MLAs, with results on May 4. The main contest is between the ruling Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and the BJP.
In the above context, a video is being widely shared in which some army officers are arresting some people and taking them to a vehicle amid public chaos. The video was shared by some people with a claim that the Indian Army is operating in Bengal ahead of the elections and is teaching troublemakers a lesson.
The video is shared with a caption that reads, “The Indian Army has reached West Bengal; now these ‘pigs’ will be dealt with one by one.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from Bangladesh.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by a Facebook page of Bangladeshi media house Pro Media on February 12. The video was shared with a caption that reads, “Three arrested from Manik Nagar High School in Dhaka's seat.”
Another Facebook page, The Daily Amar Praner Bangladesh, also shared the same video on February 12 with a caption that reads, “Three arrested from Maniknagar Model High School polling station.”
In the video, at around 29 seconds, we can see that the vehicle has the text, ‘Bangladesh Army.’ Moreover, a banner at the school gate reads ‘Bangladesh Election Commission’ in Bengali.
A geolocation of Maniknagar Model High School confirmed the location of the video.
In the video, we can see the same school gate as seen in the geolocation. Moreover, we can see the same billboard and a shop near the school, which is also visible in the viral video. All the information suggests that the viral video is from Bangladesh.
Therefore, we conclude that the claim is false.
