On April 24, Raghav Chadha quit the Aam Aadmi Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party along with six other Rajya Sabha MPs. Chadha said AAP had become a ‘toxic work environment’ and accused it of drifting from its original anti-corruption ideals. The move dealt a major blow to AAP in Parliament.
In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party, is seen crying.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it shows Arvind Kejriwal crying after Raghav Chadha left the party.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, Seven Aam Aadmi Party MPs have joined the BJP. After this, Arvind Kejriwal's eyes turned moist."
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video shows Arvind Kejriwal crying after a Delhi court cleared him and others in the Delhi liquor policy case.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by Money Control on February 27 with a caption that reads, “Arvind Kejriwal Crying Video: After being acquitted by the court in the alleged excise policy scam case, Arvind Kejriwal said, ‘The excise case was the biggest political conspiracy in the history of independent India.’”
We found that the screenshot of the video was also shared by Hindustan Times on February 27. According to the report associated with the image, it stated that Arvind Kejriwal broke down in tears after a Delhi court discharged him, Manish Sisodia, and 21 others in the liquor policy case. Kejriwal said, ‘I am not corrupt,’ calling the verdict proof of their honesty. The court said the CBI failed to establish any conspiracy or criminal intent.
The incident was also reported by NDTV. According to the report, the Delhi liquor policy case centred on the Aam Aadmi Party government’s 2021 excise policy, which changed how liquor licences were issued in Delhi. Investigators from the CBI and ED alleged irregularities, favouritism to private firms, cartelisation, and kickbacks during policy formulation and implementation. Several senior Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia were arrested and questioned. AAP denied wrongdoing, calling the case politically motivated.
In February 2026, a Delhi court reportedly discharged Kejriwal, Sisodia and others, saying the prosecution failed to establish sufficient grounds to proceed. The case became one of India’s most politically significant corruption probes involving an opposition party.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
