There are reports that Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is unwell. Amid this rumour, a video has gone viral in which people are seen burning a billboard.
Those sharing the video claim that it shows people in Iran burning a billboard featuring Khamenei’s poster after Donald Trump won the US presidential elections.
A social media user shared the video and wrote, “A billboard of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was set on fire by crowds. Iranian people are becoming bolder after Trump’s victory.”
SouthCheck found that the claim was misleading. The viral video is two years old.
On doing a Google reverse image search, we found the same video shared on Instagram on November 17, 2024. The caption stated that the viral video was two years old when people were protesting against Khamenei. The caption read, “In 2022 - A giant billboard of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was set on fire by crowds fed up with Islamic tyranny.”
We found an X user’s account where the video was shared on September 22, 2023.
We further found that the video was shared on the Facebook page of The Telegraph on September 23, 2022. The description suggested that the incident happened in Tehran, Iran, where people set fire to a billboard of Iran’s supreme leader to mark their anger against the death of a woman arrested for improperly wearing a hijab.
Hence, we conclude that the viral video is old and unrelated to Trump coming into power in the US.
