A video showing police personnel forcibly removing a young woman from her home has gone viral on social media. Those sharing the video claim it depicts the eviction of Bangladeshi immigrants from West Bengal. The footage is being shared with the claim that a Bangladeshi national named Fatima and her family were being forcefully evicted by police after refusing to vacate their house.
A social media user shared the video with a caption which, when translated in English, reads, “#In West Bengal, a Bangladeshi intruder Fatima and her family are being taken into custody by force after they are not willing to leave... They think that they will stay here for the rest of their lives by infiltrating and taking over the benefits here… But the story has changed… Nothing will be the same anymore... Jihadis will definitely be thrown away.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from Rajasthan and shows a girl being forcefully removed during a government-led eviction drive to clear encroachments on government land.
A Google reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led to the X account of Dr Syed Naseer Hussain, a Member of Parliament. He shared the video on June 27, with a caption that reads, “The BJP government has demolished the homes of Bhil Adivasi families in Barmer, Rajasthan. First, their jal, jungle and zameen were taken. Now, even their homes are being demolished. Instead of protecting indigenous communities, the BJP government is pushing them further towards displacement and insecurity. The Bhil Adivasi community in Barmer is demanding justice, dignity, and the protection of its constitutional rights. Every community deserves the right to live on its land without the fear of displacement.”
The screenshot of the same video was also shared by a report published by ETV Bharat on June 25. According to the report, the visuals were filmed in Tilak Nagar, Barmer district, Rajasthan, during a government-led eviction drive to clear encroachments on government land.
The report states that when authorities arrived at the location, some residents refused to vacate their houses, leading to police using force to remove them before the demolition of illegal structures was completed.
The incident was also reported by the Navbharat Times on June 25.
According to this report, the demolition drive to remove alleged encroachments in Jodhpur’s Tilak Nagar turned tense when residents, led by women and a young girl, protested against the action. The girl confronted police and tried to stop the demolition, triggering clashes between protesters and security personnel. Police eventually detained several people as the administration continued the anti-encroachment drive amid heavy deployment.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
