Fact Check: Boy in viral image from UP with bruises on his back is not from Muslim community

The claim is misleading. The boy is from a Scheduled Caste and is not a Muslim.

 Many social media users are sharing the image of a person’s back with bruises. Those sharing the video claim that the boy with the bruised back is a Muslim who was beaten by his teacher in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

People identified the boy as Abdul Rehman, beaten for refusing to pluck lemon and black plum.

A social media user shared the image with a caption that reads, “UP: In Bareilly, a teacher locked a Muslim student in a room and beat him up. A student Abdul Rehman was brutally beaten when he refused to pluck berries and lemons. The teacher beat him so much that the skin on his back was torn. The victim’s family filed a case. (translated from Hindi)”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim was misleading. The boy did not belong to the Muslim community.

On searching with appropriate keywords, we found that many news organisations had reported about the incident.

Amar Ujala reported about the incident on July 22, 2024. According to the report, in a school in Bareilly, UP, a student was beaten by his teacher for refusing to pluck lemon and plum for her. The report further said that the boy belonged to a Scheduled Caste. The report had the same viral image.

Jagran also reported about the incident and stated that the teacher was suspended for her cruelty.

We further found that the Bareilly police had also tweeted about the incident, clarifying that the boy did not belong to the Muslim community.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is misleading.
