A video showing a fan suddenly detaching from the ceiling and falling on students inside a school classroom has gone viral on social media. The clip shows children seated at their desks when the spinning fan crashes, injuring several of them.

The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it is from India.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “It’s Modiji’s government, that’s why only the fan fell. Otherwise, the aeroplane would have crashed.” (Translated from Hindi)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral incident is from Birgunj, Nepal.

A Google reverse image search of keyframes from the video led us to a post by journalist Siraj Nurani on X on May 22. The video was shared with a caption identifying the location as Siddhartha School in Birgunj, Nepal.

The caption reads, “#Nepal- Two students of class 7 were injured when a ceiling fan fell on them while classes were being held at Siddhartha School in Birgunj. The school said the students were treated after the incident.”

We found that the screenshot of the video was shared by Prakash Dainik, a Nepal-based website, on May 21, with the report that suggests that a ceiling fan suddenly fell inside a classroom at Siddharth Secondary School in the Pipara area of Birgunj, in Nepal, in the morning, injuring three Class 7 students, two of them seriously. The incident sparked panic among students and renewed concerns over the safety of infrastructure in community schools. School authorities said old equipment may have caused the accident and promised a technical inspection of all classrooms.

The incident was also reported by Neo Khabar, suggesting that the viral video is from Nepal.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
