Fact Check: Did Kashmiris celebrate India’s defeat in ICC World Cup final?

An old and unrelated video has gone viral as people in Kashmir are celebrating India's loss in the ICC World Cup.

India lost the ICC World Cup 2023 to Australia. The match was held in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023.

A video is widely shared on social media in which people are seen celebrating. The video is shared with a caption claiming that Kashmiris are celebrating the loss of India. 

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Kashmiri people started celebrating Indian defeat against Australia in Kashmir #AusvsIND #indiancrowd #irfanpathan #Worlds2023 #INDvsAUS #CWC23Final #siraj #Shami.”

Fact check

SouthCheck found the claim to be fake.

On analyzing the video using InVid tools, we found the same video was published by a Facebook page on August 14, 2020. The video was shared with a caption that reads, “Just Now Firecrackers on Pakistan's Independence Day in Downtown, Srinagar. Video location: Nawakadal, Srinagar.…”

Another Facebook page also published the same story.

A YouTube video also published the same video three years ago.

Hence, we can ascertain that an old and unrelated video has gone viral on social media.
