Fact Check: Did Nitin Gadkari speak about the weakening rural-agricultural economy in the context of the BJP government?

A 19-second video has gone viral on social media in which Nitin Gadkari is seen saying that poor people, laborers, and farmers are sad because there are no good roads or any other infrastructure that connects the rural, agricultural, and tribal economies. Many Congress leaders are sharing the video with a caption hinting that Gadkari made the statement concerning the BJP-led NDA government.

The video is shared by the official X handle of Congress with a caption that reads,आज गांव, गरीब, मज़दूर और किसान दुखी हैं. गावों में अच्छे रोड नहीं, पीने के लिए शुद्ध पानी नहीं, अच्छे अस्पताल नहीं, अच्छे स्कूल नहीं हैं. - मोदी सरकार के मंत्री नितिन गडकरी” (English translation, “Today the villages, poor, laborers and farmers are unhappy. There are no good roads, no pure water to drink, no good hospitals, and no good schools in the villages. Modi government minister Nitin Gadkari.”)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found the claim to be misleading. We found the video to be edited. In the original video, Gadkari is making a statement concerning Congress.

On closely observing the video, we found the logo of The Lallantop in the top right corner of the video.

Taking a hint, we searched with appropriate keywords and found that the full version of the video was uploaded by The Lallantop on February 29, 2024. In this video, at around 18:12 timestamp, one can find that Nitin Gadkari says that during Gandhi’s time, the population lived in villages, and then slowly 30 per cent of the people migrated because villages, the poor, labourers and farmers were unhappy. This is because there were no good roads, no pure water to drink, no good hospitals, no good schools in the villages, and no good prices for farmers.”

The Lallantop had also taken to X to share the viral video and debunk the claim. It shared the link to the original video with a caption suggesting that the video was clipped.

PIB Fact Check also uploaded the video with a caption suggesting that the viral video is edited from a longer video and in the original video, Gadkari is seen speaking in context with the Congress government.
