Fact Check: Did protesting farmers garland PM Modi’s effigy with footwear?

The viral video is from the US, and it does not show Indian farmers protesting.

Amid the ongoing farmer protests in Delhi’s border states, many social media users are sharing a video in which an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is garlanded with shoes and tied to a truck. In the background voice, one can hear a person saying, “We are protesting in winter as he has taken away our bread. He will snatch our land, we will punch Modi.”

The video is shared with a caption claiming that the viral video is of the ongoing farmer protest.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “देश के @PMOIndia @narendramodi की हत्या की धमकी लगातार दी जा रही है। (English translation, “Threats of killing the country's PM Modi are being made continuously. Videos from the Farmers Protest 2024 showed that this time PM will not escape from Punjab. The Home Minister should take action against those who talk about killing the Prime Minister. Watch this video. I don't understand why they have hatred for Modi. One should hate Congress whose government they form. This can only be an international conspiracy.”)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found the claim to be false. We found that the video is doctored and is from a protest in Oregon, US.

After closely observing the video, we found that the number 5037769177 was written on the signboard, as seen in the video.

We searched the number on Google and found that the number was of a restaurant named Sizzling Tandoori Hut located in Aurora, Oregon.

Thus, it is clear that the viral video is from the US.

Moreover, we found that the audio clip is from an old NDTV video that was published in 2020.

While we could still not find the exact reason behind the video, we could surely conclude that the viral video is not associated with the ongoing farmers’ protest in Delhi.
