A video is widely being shared on social media in which some youths are seen vandalising a statue. The video is being shared with a caption suggesting that it shows people breaking the statue of Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.
The text embedded in the video reads, “2 North Indians started thinking about whether the Indian nationalist Godse, who shot the Indian traitor Gandhi, needed a statue, and the 2 rupee coin chanting began..!”
A social media user shared the video with the caption: “India's first terrorist. Statue of Papara Pardesi dog beaten and smashed by North Indians. All over India. The day is not far away when RSS Hindutva terrorist papara dogs will be beaten and chased away.”
SouthCheck found the claim to be false. We found that the viral video is from Nepal and shows protesters breaking the statue of BP Koirala.
On conducting a Google Reverse Image Search, we found that the same video was shared by an X account on September 10, 2025. The video was shared with the caption, “The youths in Nepal took down statues of prominent politicians erected in the city!”
The text embedded in the video reads, “Aaj bp chok nepalgunj k hudai cha desh ma plz peace.”
The video was also shared by another Facebook page on September 10, 2025, with the caption, “What is happening today at BP Chowk Nepalgunj?”
We further found a longer version of the video shared by News18 India. At around the 1:04 timestamp, similar visuals can be seen from a different angle. A man wearing a half-sleeved T-shirt and a helmet is seen breaking the statue from the front, while another man is seen striking the statue from the back. The video was shared on September 9, 2025, with the caption, “After the ongoing uproar in Nepal, Prime Minister KP Oli has resigned from his post. Meanwhile, protesters entered the Parliament building and set it on fire.”
We also found that a Facebook page shared the visuals on September 13, 2025, with the caption, “Statue of BP Koirala in Nepalgunj during Gen Z protest.”
We further searched for the location on Google Maps and found the statue installed at the same location, along with nearby shops matching those seen in the viral video. The location is BP Chowk in Nepalgunj.
Hence, we ascertain that the viral claim is false.
