Fact Check: Does viral image show people protesting against CM Kejriwal’s arrest?

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a corruption case linked to the Delhi liquor policy on March 21, 2024.

In this backdrop, an image has gone viral on social media, which shows a massive crowd. The image is shared with a caption claiming that it shows people protesting against Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest.

A social media user shared the image with the caption, “This picture shows that the end of the dictator is certain... People are on the streets against Kejriwal's arrest. (sic)”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found the claim to be false. We found the viral image was of Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra. 

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same image was published by Shillong Times with a caption mentioning that the image was of  Lord Jagganath Rath Yatra.

We also found the same image was uploaded on an Instagram page on June 23, 2023.

Times Content also published the image with a caption mentioning that it was of the crowd of devotees during the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath held in Puri, Odisha. The caption also mentioned that the image was from June 20, 2023.

We also found the same image was posted by Odisha’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on his Facebook page on June 20, 2023. The image was shared with a caption suggesting that the viral image was of Jagannath Yatra 2023. 

NDTV India had also posted the same image.

Hence, we can ascertain that an image of Lord Jagganath Yatra is being shared in context with Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest.
