A video has surfaced online that shows the roof of a sports auditorium suddenly collapsing making the players run for cover while some get stuck under the debris. The video is being shared with the claim that it shows the recent earthquake that occurred in the Philippines.

A social media user shared the video with the caption, “Additional footage surfaces from the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines; both the Philippines and Japan are under a tsunami warning.”

A massive earthquake of 7.6 magnitude hit the southern Philippine coast on December 2, 2023.

Fact check

SouthCheck found that the video is not related to the recent earthquake.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search with one of the keyframes, we found the same video on a YouTube channel, KHOU 11, on September 19, 2022, with the caption, “A strong earthquake shook much of Taiwan, toppling a three-story building and temporarily trapping four people inside, stranding about 400 tourists on a mountainside, and knocking part of a passenger train off its tracks. One person died and nine people had minor injuries, Taiwan’s Emergency Operations Center said. The magnitude 6.8 quake was the largest among dozens that have rattled the island’s southeastern coast. Later, a 6.4 quake struck the same area.”

We found the same video published by CNN with the caption, “Surveillance footage captured the moment a gymnasium collapsed following a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in southeastern Taiwan.” An attached report gave detailed information on the event.

India Today also uploaded the video on September 20, 2022, with the caption, “A dramatic video showed over a half-dozen people sprinting for cover in a Taiwanese gymnasium as the roof collapsed in a massive earthquake.”

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is old and is from Taiwan, not the Philippines.
