Fact Check: Does viral video show Digvijay Singh snubbing woman for asking for promised financial aid?

The claim is false. The woman came to Digvijay Singh to ask for a party ticket ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress announced that it will financially help poor families by depositing Rs 8,500 every month into accounts of women in the families.

Against this backdrop, a video is being widely shared on social media in which a woman is seen trying to meet Congress leader Digvijay Singh, while his staff ask the woman to leave. Even Digvijay Singh looks angry with the woman.

The video is shared with a caption claiming that Digvijay Singh got angry at the woman when she came to ask for Rs 8,500 from him.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “See what they did when a woman came to ask Digvijay Singh about Rs 8500.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The woman wanted to meet Digvijay Singh to seek a party ticket and contest elections in 2024 for Congress.

On searching with appropriate keywords, we found the same video uploaded by MP Tak on February 21, 2024.

The video was shared with the caption, “Former CM Digvijay Singh got angry with a woman in Gwalior. Digvijay Singh got angry when he saw her and shouted at the guard to throw her out. The woman later spoke to media where she said her name was Leena Sharma. She said that she was asking for a ticket from the party to contest Lok Sabha elections from Banaras.”

News18 Hindi also reported about the incident on February 21, 2024. The report stated that the name of the woman was Dr Leena Sharma. She said she was the former district general secretary and president of a women’s group in the Indian National Congress. Moreover, talking to the media, she said that Digvijay Singh had said nothing to her and asked to meet her later.

According to NDTV Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh, the incident is from Gwalior where Digvijay met the senior leaders of the party in Hotel Central Park.

Hence, we conclude that the viral claim is false.
