A video of a man assaulting a police officer has gone viral with the claim that it shows Mansoor Mohammed, an MLA of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), slapping a police inspector.

“DMK MLA Mansoor Mohammed beats up a police inspector on duty in Tamil Nadu. This is what happens when you choose a government based on castes, creed and language. Tamilnadu is on the path of West Bengal, (sic)” said an X user sharing the video.

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is misleading as the video is from Uttar Pradesh.

On doing a Google reverse image search with one of the video’s screenshots, we found it on the YouTube channel of ETV Andhra Pradesh, published on October 20, 2018. The video was titled ‘BJP Councillor beat up a UP Police Sub Inspector in a Restaurant | Uttar Pradesh’.

A report by NDTV also shared the same video on October 20, 2018, titled ‘BJP Leader Thrashes “Drunk” Cop At His Restaurant In UP, Arrested’. “An Uttar Pradesh cop’s Dussehra dinner ended with thrashing and a generous serving of expletives by the restaurant owner, who is also a BJP councillor,” the report said.

The Times of India had also reported on the incident with the title ‘Meerut: BJP councillor thrashes UP cop, attacks woman friend in his restaurant, booked’. Another report by The Times of India, published on April 16, 2021, claimed that Chaudhary was found dead in his car with bullet wounds.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is old and shows a BJP councillor and not a DMK leader.
