Fact Check: Does viral video show Palestinians pretending to be dead?

Amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, a video is widely being shared on social media in which people are lying on the floor covered in shrouds like dead bodies. However, some of the ‘bodies’ can also be seen moving.

Accounts sharing the video claim that it shows Palestinians pretending to be dead to show Israel in a bad light.

A social media user shared the video and said, “Al Jazeera has done amazing shooting. Even the dead Hamas man is itching due to the heat of the camera!”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is from 2013 and is from Egypt where university students were protesting.

On doing a Google reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded on a YouTube channel on October 28, 2013. The caption associated with the video stated that the viral video shows students acting as dead bodies inside Al-Azhar University.

Taking a hint, we searched with appropriate keywords and found that the incident was also reported by Reuters on October 12, 2013. “Thousands of students from Egypt’s al-Azhar University staged a third day of protests on Monday, in one of the boldest challenges to the army since it toppled Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July,” the report said.

The incident was also reported by the BBC on October 20, 2013.

Hence, we conclude that the viral video is old and has nothing to do with the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
