An image is being widely shared on social media in which a man wearing an orange turban is seen touching the feet of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to take her blessings.
Those sharing the image claim that the man is former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who has recently passed away at 92. A social media user shared the image and wrote, “Look at the former PM of the Gandhi family.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The man in the image is not Manmohan Singh but a Congress representative.
On a Google reverse image search, we found the image on Getty Images with the caption, “NEW DELHI, INDIA - NOVEMBER 29: A representative touches the feet of Sonia Gandhi as Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi looks on during the Indian Youth Congress's national level convention of Elected Office Bearers in New Delhi on Tuesday. (Photo by Shekhar Yadav/The India Today Group via Getty Images)”.
It is the same image with even the current Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in both photos in the same pose. The date of the file creation was mentioned as ‘29 November, 2011’ in the description. The caption confirmed that the person is not Manmohan Singh.
This was further confirmed by another image from Getty Images we found which featured Dr Manmohan Singh wearing his signature blue turban at the same event. Therefore, we conclude that the man in the viral image is not Manmohan Singh but a Congress party member.
The viral claim is false.
