A letter purportedly written by the Adani Group has gone viral on social media. In the letter, Adani Group is allegedly threatening to name all stakeholders and government officials who it has bribed in Kenya.

The contents of the letter are about protests against the Adani Group in Kenya and how the company is worried about the impact on its reputation. The letter states that the company demands a stop to the demonstrations and in the event of continuing protests, the company will ‘reveal the names of every government shareholder who has received bribe from the company.’

A social media user shared the letter with the caption, “ADANI GROUP are now threatening to expose everyone they bribed in JKIA fraud sale #StopAdaniDeal. They are asking for a refund if high court halts the illegal sale or Kenya airport authority protest persist #RutoMustGo. State house has responded by sponsoring #JKIAUpgrade upuzi.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim was false. Adani Group has not issued any such letter.

After the letter went viral, Adani Group issued a press release on its website, stating that the letter was false.

The press release read, “Certain vested interests with malicious intent are circulating multiple fraudulent press releases, including one titled ‘Adani Group Denounces Baseless Accusations and Threats’, related to our presence in Kenya. We categorically state that neither the Adani Group nor any of its companies or subsidiaries have issued any Press Releases related to Kenya.”

The same was covered by The Hindustan Times on September 16. The report stated that the Adani Group has denied issuing the viral letter on the company or its subsidiaries in the ongoing projects in Kenya. The report also quoted the spokesperson of the company.

Siasat had also reported about the incident, quoting the company that said: “We strongly condemn this deceitful act and urge everyone to disregard these fake fraudulent releases completely.”
