Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is from Nepal.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by an Instagram page, Nepalsjournal, on May 6.

The caption associated with the video suggests that the video is from a primary school in Kapilvastu. It showed students being shielded from rainwater leaking into a classroom during strong winds. Volunteer teacher Shambhu BK used benches as a temporary shelter to protect children. The incident raised concerns about poor school infrastructure. Education Minister Sashmit Pokharel praised the teacher’s efforts and called for measures to ensure student safety during the monsoon season.

We found that the video was also shared by a Nepal-based Facebook page.

Nepal in Last 24HR on May 6, with a caption that reads, “A viral video from Kapilvastu has drawn national attention after showing a teacher protecting students from rain inside a classroom. Minister Sasmit Pokharel expressed concern after the video showed students of Grade 3 at Shree Ramsharan Basic School in Bijaynagar–Judpaniya struggling due to rainwater entering the classroom. The footage, posted by volunteer teacher Shambhu Bik, shows him using a bench to shield children as water leaked through the tin roof and ventilation gaps.

Following the incident, an inspection team from the Education Development and Coordination Unit Kapilvastu, visited the site. Officials confirmed that poor infrastructure caused water to enter the classroom. Authorities also stated that efforts are underway to construct a new building for the school. The minister praised the teacher’s humanitarian effort and urged everyone to stay alert during ongoing pre-monsoon storms and natural disasters across the country.”

We further found that Nepal’s education minister, Sasmit Pokhrel, also shared the screenshot of the video on May 6, and expressed his gratitude towards the teacher. He wrote, “Gratitude! The video along with the tragic scene of a teacher giving a student studying in class 3 at Shri Ramsharan Basic School, Vijaynagar Rural Municipality-Judpaniya, Kapilvastu, which was drenched by water due to the storm, has made the heart restless.

Volunteer teacher Shambhu Bik had posted the video on social networks on Tuesday. After some parts of the roof of a two-room building were shaded by zastapata, students got wet when water leaked.

The team, along with the head of the Education Development and Coordination Unit, Kapilvastu, have conducted the spot monitoring to get more information about the incident. During the surveillance, it was found that there is a problem of entering the water cell due to ventilation in two rooms of the blocks shaded by zero leaves. Information has been received from the relevant authorities to construct the new building of the school.

I express my gratitude for this unique work of humanity. Also, I request everyone who are concerned to take the necessary precaution to prevent natural disasters, including winds, lightning and rainfall across the country during monsoon.”
