A video is being widely circulated on social media in which a man is being assaulted.

The video is shared with a caption suggesting that a man named Touhidi Jannat assaulted a Hindu boy, which resulted in his death. The hashtag suggests thatthe  video is from Bangladesh.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “The thugs named Towhidi Janata beat and killed a Hindu boy of Sanatan Dharma with the ISKCON militant tag.. #militant #mob_terrorism #Bangladesh.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is from Nepal, not Bangladesh. There is no communal issue to the incident.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was published by a Facebook page, Gen Z Nepal, on September 9. The video was shared with a caption suggesting that it shows a DSP being assaulted for ordering a shooting.

Taking a hint, we searched with relevant keywords and found that a similar video was shared by another Nepal-based Instagram page. The video was posted on September 10 and was shared with a caption that reads, “In a shocking twist to the ongoing Gen Z protest crisis, the Kathmandu DSP who ordered police to open fire yesterday—leading to the deaths of more than 17 protesters—was himself killed today by furious demonstrators. What began as a crackdown has now spiralled into retaliation, with tensions boiling over into outright chaos on the streets of Kathmandu."

While in this video, the body was covered with cardboard, yet the position and colour of the clothing are the same.

While we were not able to find any mainstream reports of Nepali media organisations about the same, we found a report by ABP News. The report suggested, ‘Nepal Gen-Z Protest: DSP who ordered firing on protesters killed | Kathmandu.;

Thus, we can ascertain that the viral video is from Nepal and not Bangladesh. There is no communal aspect to the incident.

What was Nepal’s Gen Z protest?

On September 8, thousands of young Nepalis—dubbed “Gen Z”—protested a government ban on 26 social media platforms and widespread corruption. Security forces opened fire, using tear gas, rubber bullets, and live rounds, killing at least 19 and injuring hundreds.
