Fact Check: Hindu students assaulted in Bangladesh? No, viral claim is false

A video of a group of youths vandalising a building and assaulting others with sticks has gone viral. Those sharing the video claim that it shows Hindu students being thrashed by Muslims in Bangladesh.

A social media user shared the video and wrote, “In Dhaka, #Bangladesh, #Hindu students have been brutally targeted and murdered. This horrific violence is part of a larger, alarming trend in Bangladesh, where Hindus and other minorities are systematically singled out for persecution and death. (sic)”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim was false. The video is from a recent violent clash among students at Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College (DMRC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

On a Google reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded on the YouTube channel of BDNews 24.com on November 25, 2024. The caption said the video shows clashes among students of the Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul Government College. It also shows how looting took place in Mollah College after the clash.

Taking this hint, we searched with relevant keywords and found that the incident was also reported by Prothomalo on November 25, 2024. The report stated that vandalism occurred at Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College (DMRC) when students of Shaheed Suhrawardy College and National Medical College also entered the college.

We further found that the incident was also reported by The Business Standard, Bangladesh. The report mentioned that vandalism happened in the Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College (DMRC) during clashes between the institute’s students and those of Kabi Nazrul Government College and Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College.

No incidents of violence due to communal issues were mentioned in the reports. Therefore, we conclude that the claim is false.
