An image is being widely shared on social media in which two dead bodies are seen lying on the ground.
The image’s caption claims that the viral image is of Hindus being murdered in Bangladesh.
A social media user shared the image (warning: graphic visual) and wrote, “Hindus are being targeted in Bangladesh. The home of these two unfortunate brothers is in Tangail district. After protesting the attack and vandalism of their temple, they were forcibly taken away from their home in the dark of night after 2 days of protesting the attack and vandalism at various places including the police station administration, seeking justice. The bodies of the two brothers were found dead the next morning. In this way, the bodies of the traditionalists are being recovered from various places in Bangladesh, including rivers, canals, ponds, and ponds, in a state of being slaughtered, hanged, and with their hands and feet tied, which is very horrific and frightening. (sic)”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. Though the viral image is from Bangladesh and the cause of the death is yet to be known, the deceased were Muslims, not Hindus.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same image was uploaded by a Facebook page on December 8, 2024. The image was shared with a caption that reads, “The dead bodies of two youths were recovered from the cropland in Jafarganj of Debidwar sub-district of Comilla.”
Taking a hint, we searched with relevant keywords and found a report by Dhaka Times on December 8, 2024, which had the same image. The report stated that police had recovered the bodies of two young men from a pond in the Jafarganj area of Comilla. The report further stated that the deceased were identified as Monirul Islam of Debidwar, Jafarganj area and Mohan Mia of Ramganj area, Khagrachari. Both worked for an internet service company. However, the police were not able to identify the cause of their death.
Another website Samakal also reported the incident on December 8, 2024. According to the report, the deceased were identified as Monir Hossain, son of the late Dulu Mia of Haji Ali Member Bari in Jafarganj village, and Mohan Mia, son of Ruhul Amin of Sukendrapara in Ramgarh upazila of Khagrachhari district.
Therefore, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
