A video showing a series of massive explosions with towering flames and thick black smoke has gone viral on social media.
It is shared with users claiming it is of a Houthi attack that blew up a major oil pipeline in Israel. The video has been shared widely on social media amid heightened military tensions between the Iran-backed Houthis and Israel.
Social media shared the video with the caption, “Breaking Houthi attack on an Israeli sector, causing a major oil pipeline to be blown up in explosions. This is clearly visible in the footage.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video shows a weapons depot explosion in Syria.
On doing a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared with a Facebook page, Alaraby_ar, on September 21. According to the caption, “Moment of explosion in ammunition warehouses belonging to the Syrian army in the countryside of Aleppo.”
We further found that the screenshot of the video was also shared by a news website, i24 News, on September 21.
According to the report, Syrian authorities are investigating possible Israeli involvement in unexplained weapons depot explosions, according to reports cited by The Island. The latest blasts near al-Eis, south of Aleppo, triggered secondary explosions, prompting evacuations and road closures. Earlier explosions killed 11 people in Deir ez-Zor and 14 in northwestern Syria. Damascus has not publicly accused Israel, while investigators work to establish the causes and responsibility.
