Many social media users are sharing a video featuring an image in which two males and two females are naked. Those sharing the image claim that it shows a family from the Dalit community being punished by forcibly stripping them when they went to report theft in their house.

(This the behaviour against a Dalit family in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Is it right way to treat them for wanting to file a report against and asked for the thief to be caught?”)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is misleading.

On searching with appropriate keywords, we found the same image published by India Today on October 10, 2015. The report associated with the image stated that the Dalit family stripped themselves in the market as a protest against the alleged police refusal to register a complaint of robbery.

The video of the incident was also shared by IndiaTV news. The report stated that two days before the incident, the family went to lodge a robbery complaint at Dankaur Police Station. However, the police refused to register a complaint of robbery. As a result, they stripped themselves naked as a protest. Police said that the family members were allegedly arrested after lodging an FIR against them over obscenity.

Hence, we can ascertain that the image is being shared with a misleading claim that the Dalit family were stripped as punishment by the police.
