A video is being widely shared on social media in which a bulldozer is removing shanties with some women crying.
The video is shared with a text which, when translated into English, reads, “It was the mistake of the people of India to be born as Muslims. Look at the houses of Muslims being vandalised.”
The video claims to show houses of Muslims being targeted and destroyed in India.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Please share this video more and more. All Muslims around the world can see what is being tortured on Muslims in India. Please share”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from an eviction operation conducted to reclaim government khas land in Jessore, Bangladesh.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by the Facebook page of a Bangladeshi TV channel, Maasranga TV news, on May 14. The video was shared with a caption that reads, “More than 6 hundred establishments in Jessore evacuation operation, many families lost their head.”
Using this information, we searched with relevant keywords and found that the same incident was also reported by Bangla Tribune on May 11.
According to the report, the National Housing Authority in Jessore carried out a two-day eviction drive from May 10-11, demolishing over 400 illegal structures, including BNP and Awami League offices, and reclaiming five acres of government land worth around Tk 50 crore. Authorities said repeated notices were issued earlier, while several affected families alleged they were evicted without adequate warning and accused past officials of taking bribes.
The incident was also reported by another Bangladeshi website, Samakaal on May 10.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
