A tourist cruise boat capsized at Madhya Pradesh’s Bargi Dam near Jabalpur on April 30 after being caught in a sudden storm and rough waves. The vessel, carrying around 40–45 passengers, overturned during an evening ride, triggering a major rescue operation by SDRF, police, and local authorities.

At least nine people were reported dead, including children, while several others were rescued. Initial reports have raised questions over delayed life-jacket distribution and possible safety lapses.

In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which people are seen struggling to stay afloat in water beside a capsized boat.

The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it shows the boat capsizing in Jabalpur.

A social media user shared the video and wrote, “The cruise accident in Jabalpur has left everyone shaken.” (Translated from Hindi)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is misleading. The video is from 2025 and from Bangladesh.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by a Facebook page on December 28, 2025, with a caption that reads, “A tourist-carrying boat reportedly capsized in the famous Kaptai Lake of Rangamati, triggering panic among visitors. Local sources stated that the boat overturned while cruising on the lake, a popular destination for travellers. Rescue operations were initiated, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Details regarding injuries or casualties are yet to be confirmed.”

We found that the longer version of the video was also shared by the Bangladeshi YouTube channel Somoy National on December 26, 2025. The video was shared with a caption that reads, “Boat carrying 19 tourists capsizes in Kaptai Lake Boat Sinking Kaptai Lake Rangamati.”

The incident was also reported by the Bangladeshi news website, Bangladesh Tribune, on December 26, 2025.

According to the report, a tourist boat capsized in Kaptai Lake in Bangladesh’s Rangamati on December 26 while returning from Subalong, after being hit by waves from a larger vessel. Around 20 passengers, including women and children, were on board, many sitting on the roof without life jackets. Nearby boats quickly rescued everyone, and no casualties were reported, though the incident raised concerns over overcrowding and safety lapses.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is misleading.
