Launched on July 6, the movement demanded action over the NEET-UG paper leak, exam irregularities, unemployment and broader education reforms. It drew nationwide attention following alleged police action on protesters on July 20.
In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which a large crowd of protesters are seen on the street. The text embedded in the video reads, “Jantar Mantar Live Update, Demands for the resignation of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah intensify. 01/08/2026.”
The video is shared with the claim that it is of another protest held at Jantar Mantar on August 1, demanding the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The video is shared with a caption that reads, “Demands for the resignation of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah intensify.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is from July 24 in Kolkata, where a protest was held demanding the resignation of then-Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by the YouTube channel of a hyperlocal news channel on July 24. The video was shared with a caption that reads, “Kolkata Breaking | Chaos, tear gas and lathicharge in NEET Protest.”
Since the video precedes the date of August 1, we can ascertain that the viral video is old.
We further found that the screenshot of the video was also shared by the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation, Dipankar Bhatacharya, on July 24.
The video is shared with a caption that reads, “Salam Kolkata! What an emphatic response to (read rejection of) Modi's midnight reel and the scripted break of Sonam’s fast! Make no mistake, the movement will only grow stronger and spread wider. No amount of repression or theatrics can stop it.”
Thus, the post identified the location as Kolkata, where protests were being held demanding the resignation of then-Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak.
The video was also shared by the official Facebook page of the Communist Party of India, dated July 24, with a caption that reads, “Left student organisations on the street for Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.”
We also found that the screenshot of the video was shared by a report by Country and Politics, published on July 24.
The report associated with the video further confirmed that the video showed students protesting in Central Kolkata against the NEET paper leak and demanding Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.
