A pleasant video of what looks like a dam with water flowing through its open gates amid a hilly region with lush greenery has gone viral. Those sharing the video claim it shows a dam in Kerala

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “World class infrastructure of Kerala.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral image is of a dam in Tamil Nadu.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that a similar video was shared by a YouTube channel on July 29. The video was shared with a caption suggesting that the video is of Adavinainar Dam, Kerala.

However, on further searches, we found that Adavinainar Dam is in Tamil Nadu and not Kerala.

We found an image similar to the viral video shared on Instagram. The image is shared with a caption that reads, “The Adavinainar Dam is located at the foothills of Western Ghats and border of Kerala, built across the Hanumanadhi River near Mekkarai, Vadakarai in the Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu, Southern India. It provides water for irrigation to the region of Sengottai Taluk.”

We also found a video of the Adavinair Dam shared by News 18 on June 29. We compared the viral video with the video shared by News 18 and found them to be the same. A building on the top-right of the dam is present in both videos.

We further found that a photo of Adavinainar Dam was also shared by the X account of Tamil Nadu Tourism on December 2, 2022.

The image was shared with a caption that reads, “Situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats across the Hanumanadhi River in Mekkarai is the Adavinainar Dam, also called the ‘Mekkarai Dam’. It is a breathtaking sight to behold as the water flows through the dam gates as they open.” The caption further suggested that the image was of Tenkasi dam.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is of Tamil Nadu, not Kerala.
