On February 14, a coal-laden truck collided with a motorcycle, which resulted in the deaths of two people. The incident occurred near Amilia Ghati in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. The incident resulted in angry villagers staging a road blockade and setting fire to some buses and trucks belonging to the Adani Group.
In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media, showing police attacking people with sticks. Those sharing the video claim it shows police action against people protesting the Adani Group after the accident in Singrauli, MP.
A social media user shared the video and wrote, “Atrocities of Adani in Singrauli: How long will we tolerate injustice? Lathicharge on the providers of food! Displaced farmers are not given fair compensation! Job promises are just a sham!” (Translated from English)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from Rajasthan and the protest was against the Jindal Group.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was tweeted by Hanuman Beniwal, a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament and farmer leader from Nagaur, Rajasthan. He shared the video on January 8, 2025. This indicated that the viral video is old.
According to the information he shared in the caption the police of Nagaur colluded with the BJP-led government and JSW (Jindal South-West) Cement Company officials to break up a farmers’ protest by force. He said many men and women were injured in the lathi charge. He said the protest was being held against the JSW Cement Company on the border of Sarasani village in Nagaur, Rajasthan.
Nav Bharat Times reported about the incident on January 9, 2025. According to the report, villagers of Sarasani village in Nagaur staged a sit-in protest against a cement plant during which a clash broke out between the police and the protesters. Three dozen people and policemen were injured in the lathi charge by the police.
A screenshot of a similar video was also shared by Dainik Bhaskar in a report published two months ago. The report suggested that a 135-day-long protest against JSW Company for not paying appropriate compensation turned violent after police lathi-charged protestors on January 8, 2025.
The report read that JSW Company had purchased land from the farmers of Sarasani village at the rate of Rs 8 lakh per bigha, while the land was purchased in other villages including Harima nearby at the rate of Rs 11 lakh. For this reason, the farmers of Sarasani village have been protesting since August 22, 2024, demanding an increase of Rs 3 lakh per bigha.
While we couldn’t independently confirm whether a similar incident took place in Madhya Pradesh, we conclude that the video is not from Singrauli but from Nagaur in Rajasthan. The claim is false.
