A video is being widely shared on social media in which a man is seen brutally assaulting his wife while his daughter begs for help. The video is shared with a caption claiming that it is from India.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that read, “Now it feels like there’s a trend of killing and dying going on in India so that these criminals can become headlines in the newspapers.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from 2022 in Kajang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where a man named Reduan Mahamood assaulted his wife.
On a Google reverse image search, we found a screenshot of the video published on the website Free Malaysia Today on November 18, 2022. The report stated that Malaysian police are investigating a viral video that allegedly shows a man abusing his wife. The disturbing footage has sparked public outrage and drawn attention to domestic violence issues in the country. Authorities are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine if criminal charges should be filed.
The Star also reported the incident on November 23, 2022. The report suggested that businessman Reduan Mahamood, 58, was sentenced by the Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to his wife, as shown in a viral TikTok video. He received a three-month jail term and an RM2,000 fine, with an additional month if the fine remains unpaid. Despite his lawyer’s appeal for leniency, the prosecution stressed the need for a strong deterrent against domestic violence.
Al Hijrah News also reported about the incident on November 19, 2022, with the same details.
Therefore, we conclude that the claim is false.
