Communal conflict occurred in West Bengal’s Murshidabad area in April over demonstrations over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. Many members of the Muslim community believed that the law, which altered how Waqf properties were administered, violated their right to practice their religion.
In the above context, a video went viral on social media in which a man is seen holding a large gun in his hand and walking on the road.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it is from West Bengal’s Murshidabad region in connection with the recent unrest in the region.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “This video will show you the condition of West Bengal. But for Sagarika Ghose, it’s propaganda by the BJP. Waah TMC waah!!”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is from Bangladesh.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that a similar video was uploaded on a YouTube channel, Somoy National, on July 17, 2024. The video was shared with a caption claiming that it was of Chittagong.
We further found that a screenshot of the video was also shared by a news website on July 16, 2024. The report associated with the image stated that during clashes in Chittagong between quota reform protesters and Chhatra League members, a young man was seen brandishing a pistol and firing at demonstrators. A video of the incident went viral on social media. Two individuals, Faruk and Wasim Akram, were killed in the violence. Authorities have yet to identify the armed individual.
