
A video is being widely shared on social media in which a man is being beaten by some people on the road.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that the man is a Muslim who is being beaten by the crowd for abducting a Hindu girl.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “In Naogaon, Bangladesh, a Mslim boy Abdul Hakim abducted a Hindu girl Anjana Roy. When her father, Haradhan Roy, protested, he was beaten and injured by #Mslims. No one has come forward to help rescue the girl so far.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The incident in the video has no communal angle to it.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the screenshot of the video was shared by a Bangladeshi website, Sylhet Barta 24, on May 14. The report associated with the screenshot read, “A group of youths in Sylhet allegedly assaulted and handed over Nirmalendu Das Rana, the chairman of Kargao Union Parishad and expelled general secretary of Nabiganj Awami League, to police. He was reportedly attacked due to past political and legal controversies.”
The incident was also reported by Daily Jalalabad. The screenshot of the video was also shared by the website. The report suggested that on May 14, Nirmalendu Das Rana, chairman of Kargao Union Parishad and general secretary of Nabiganj Municipal Awami League, was assaulted by a group of youths at Fatema Restaurant in Rikabibazar, Sylhet. The assailants attempted to drag him to Madan Mohan College premises. Police from Lamabazar outpost intervened and took him into custody. Authorities confirmed Rana faces multiple cases, including allegations related to attacks on student protesters during the July-August movement.
The incident was also reported by the Dhaka Post.
Hence, we can conclude that the viral post is shared with false claims.
