CCTV footage is being widely shared on social media in which an elderly man is being assaulted on the side of a road.
The video is shared with a caption claiming that it shows a Hindu man assaulting an elderly Muslim person.
A social media user shared the video and wrote, “A poor, elderly, disabled Muslim man was savagely and inhumanely brutalised by a Hindutva rogue solely for wearing a prayer cap.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video shows a son assaulting his father in Uttar Pradesh. There is no communal angle to the incident.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by the X account of The Siasat Daily on June 9.
The video was shared with the caption that reads, “A man in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested after a CCTV video of him brutally assaulting his 70-year-old father went viral on social media. The accused, Gulfishan, is seen slapping, punching, and grabbing his elderly father Tahsin by the collar during the attack, which occurred in Manakmau village under Qutubsher police station limits. The footage triggered widespread outrage, prompting police to swiftly take Gulfishan into custody. Station In-charge Inspector Santosh Tyagi said the dispute appears to stem from a family property row and that investigations are ongoing. The accused's family, however, claims he suffers from a mental illness. Police said further legal action will be determined based on evidence gathered from the video and the crime scene.”
We further found that the video was also shared by NDTV on June 9.
The report associated with the video suggests that in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur, CCTV footage went viral where a man brutally assaulted his 72-year-old father in public, allegedly over a domestic or property dispute. The video went viral, prompting police to arrest the son. However, in a surprising twist, the elderly father appealed to authorities to release his son, insisting he had done nothing wrong. Police are investigating the case and considering further legal action based on the evidence.
