In the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2023, Bangladesh only managed to win only two out of the nine matches they played.
In the light of their defeat, a video of Bangladeshi cricket team captain and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has gone viral on social media which shows a large crowd pushing and pulling Shakib while those around him try to get him into a safe area. The video is being shared with the claim that it shows Bangladeshis showing their disappointment on Shakib at the airport.
The video was shared with a caption: “Bangladesh cricket team captain Shakib al Hasan beaten by crowds on arrival in Bangladesh due to poor performance in the World Cup. This is ridiculous. (sic)”
SouthCheck found that the video is not related to the Bangladesh cricket team’s performance.
After fragmenting the video into multiple keyframes and doing a Google Reverse Image Search with one of the keyframes, we found the same video uploaded by Dainik Bhaskar eight months ago. (A fan misbehaved with Shakib Al Hasan for a selfie but the crowd intervened. The fan held the shirt and collar of the Bangladeshi cricketer who narrowly missed falling down.)”
News18 also reported on the same video as “Shakib was in Dubai to inaugurate a jewellery shop. The situation went totally out of control while Shakib was leaving the spot. People at the venue did not wish to miss out on a chance of being clicked with the international cricket star.”
We found that a YouTube channel, RTV, also shared the same video on March 16, 2023. The video was captioned, “দুবাইয়ে সাকিবের সঙ্গে প্রবাসীদের এ কেমন আচরণ!. (How is the behaviour of expatriates with Shakib in Dubai?)”
We did find a video of antagonism shown by Bangladeshi cricket fans against Shakib. A report in The Hindu said Shakib was booed by his fans as he left Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium after a training session after he came back home from the Cricket World Cup. However, the viral video is old and is not related to the cricket.
