On September 23, 2024, Israel’s alleged airstrike on Lebanon killed over 500 people and injured thousands. One of the airstrikes is said to have killed Hezbollah’s top commander Ibrahim Muhammad Qabisi.

In the latest escalation, Hezbollah confirmed the death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah, after Israel said he was killed in its airstrikes on the Lebanese capital of Beirut on September 27.

Against this backdrop, an image of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah crying has gone viral. Those sharing the image claim it shows him crying over the deaths of Hezbollah members.

A social media user shared the image with a caption that reads, “This is Nasrallah, the commander of the Hezbollah terrorist organisation. He was laughing out loud when Israeli people were killed on October 7! Today, when Hezbollah terrorists were killed, he is crying bitterly.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim was false. The viral image is old.

On doing a Google reverse image search, we found a video uploaded on YouTube on August 12, 2022. The Arabic title when translated read: ‘His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah cried while speaking about the misfortune of the Master of Martyrs’. The video shows the Hezbollah chief addressing people while reading from some papers.

At the 3-minute mark, the Hassan Nasrallah could be seen breaking into tears. A frame Hassan Nasrallah crying in the video is similar to the viral image in circulation.

Here is a comparison of the viral image and the screenshot of the video.

Taking this hint, we searched with appropriate keywords and found a report by a Lebanese news website, LebanonOn, published on August 11, 2022. Referring to the video, the report suggested that Hassan Nasrallah cried while delivering a speech on the occasion of Ashura while talking about Imam Hussein.

A Facebook page also shared a snippet of the same video where Nasrallah can be seen crying. The video was shared on August 11, 2022. The Urdu caption said, “Even the strongest and strongest person in Shiism weeps over the sufferings of Imam Hussain”

Hence, we conclude that the video of Hassan Nasrallah crying is old.
