Fact Check: Old video gone viral as Hindu family in car heckled in Bangladesh
A video is being widely shared on social media in which some people have surrounded a car in which a family including a child is sitting.
The video is shared with a caption that the family sitting inside the car is Hindu and is being heckled by Muslims in Dhaka, Bangladesh, during the ongoing unrest.
A social media user shared the video with the caption, “There are massive attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. A mob stopped the car of a Hindu family in Dhaka and tried to beat them to death and burn their car.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim was false. The video is from Bangladesh but is not related to the ongoing unrest.
On doing a Google reverse image search with one of the screenshots, we found the same video uploaded by a YouTube channel on February 7, 2024.
Since Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of prime minister on August 5, we confirm that the viral video is old.
We further found that the screenshots of the video were also shared on BV News on February 8, 2024. The report said that a family was attacked while visiting Green Aranya Park in Bhaluka, Mymensingh in Bangladesh.
The park staff assaulted and severely beat the female members of the family including small children. The report further suggested that the name of the victim was Shahjahan Mia. Moreover, a case was filed at Valuka Model Police Station and three people were arrested in the incident.
A report by RTV suggested that the man in the car was Shahjahan Mia who had come to visit Green Aranya Park with his wife and children. At that time, the park authorities had an argument with Shahjahan about tickets and not being able to get into the swing round. When Shahjahan tried to leave Mia Park, he was attacked by a group led by managers and employees who vandalised Shahjahan Mia’s car.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim has no communal angle to it.
