A disturbing video showing people being subjected to gas in an enclosed space has gone viral on social media.
The video is widely being shared with a caption claiming it documents Muslims being killed with gas in Palestine. The footage has been shared widely on Instagram with captions alleging it shows a real atrocity against Palestinian Muslims.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “These people have killed Muslims in Palestine. Watch the video with gas and share it as much as possible.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is a scene from a 1991 Swedish film.
On a Google Reverse Image Search, we found that the same video was shared by a YouTube channel on July 13, 2014. The video is shared with a caption that reads, “A large number of people watching a truck going around in circles.”
We further found that the same video was also shared by Vimeo with a caption suggesting that it shows that the video is 16-years old and is of the caption suggesting that it is of the movie, ‘Mundo de Glória (The World of Glory, 1991)’.
We also found that the screenshot of the video was shared by a website, Alchetron. The website talks about the film.
The article suggests that Roy Andersson wrote and directed the 1991 Swedish short film World of Glory. The song "Fairest Lord Jesus" was originally titled Härligös jorden, which translates to "Lovely is the Earth" in Swedish. In a gloomily stylised setting, the story follows a man wearing white makeup as he navigates his existence. After working in advertising for many years, the movie marked Andersson's critical return to the big screen.
We also found no news reports of Palestinians being allegedly executed by Israelis by sending them into gas chambers.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
