A video is being widely shared on social media in which people are seen being attacked as they try to flee by scaling down from the side of a building. The video is shared with the claim that Hindu students are jumping off a building in Bangladesh as they are being harassed by people of Jamaat-e-Islami, an Islamist fundamentalist group.

A social media user shared a video with the caption, “Dreadful Scene at a Hindu Students from Dhaka Bangladesh: Watch how panic-stricken Hindu students tried to escape to save their lives from the attack perpetrated by Jamaat-e-Islami. See how many of them fell from cornices and parapets!”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim was false. We found that the viral video shows Chhatra League leaders and activists being thrown off a building.

On doing a Google reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded on a YouTube channel on July 18, 2024.

The title suggested that the video is of an anti-quota protest in Bangladesh. The anchor in the video says that Bangladesh Chhatra League workers and activists were thrown off a six-storey building amid the ongoing protest in Bangladesh.

We further found that a similar video was also uploaded on the official YouTube channel of RTV.

The report suggested that amid the ongoing agitation, activists of Chhatra League and Jubo League were prevented from climbing the roof of the building for self-defence.

A report was also published by Bangla Tribune on July 18, 2024.

The report wrote about the condition of BCL workers who were thrown off the building. The report read, “The condition of six BCL workers who were thrown from a six-storey building during a clash with students agitating for quota reform in Chittagong is critical. They have been kept in the intensive care unit (ICU) of two hospitals in Chittagong. The rest are undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital and Parkview Hospital.”

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is not of Hindus being harassed but of BCL activists being attacked.
