A video allegedly from the news outlet Mirror Now is being widely shared on social media in which prime minister Narendra Modi is heard saying, “In the month of Sawan, they are enjoying mutton. Not just this, but they are also making videos to tease the nation.”
The video is juxtaposed with an image on the right side where JDU leader and Union minister Lallan Singh is allegedly serving mutton to people.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that PM Modi took a jibe at Lallan Singh for throwing a mutton party during the sawan period.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Prime Minister Modi took a dig at NDA leader Rajiv Ranjan ‘Lallan’ Singh for serving mutton in the month of Saavan. #followers #follower #RJD.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is old and unrelated to Lallan Singh.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that a similar video was shared on the Facebook page Mirror Now on April 12, 2024.
At around 0:38 seconds, we can see that ticker on the upper side reads the same text as the viral video: “Focus on more pressing issues.” On the top left corner, it is written, “Road to Lok Sabha 2024.” The time is mentioned in the bottom right corner as 5:18 pm.
The original telecast from Mirror Now, while PM Modi’s speech plays on the left side on the right, in a separate video, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and Bihar’s former minister Mukesh Sahni can be seen eating fish. This confirmed that the video showed PM Modi referring to Tejashwi Yadav and Mukesh Sahni and not Lallan Singh.
We found the complete video of PM Modi’s speech on his YouTube channel, dated April 12, 2024. At the 31:55-minute mark, we can hear PM Modi making the same statement seen in the viral video.
The video was shared with a caption that reads, “PM Modi addresses a public meeting in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir.”
We found that the image of Lallan Singh serving mutton was shared on his Facebook page on May 14, 2023. The caption read, “Munger: at a banquet organised in honour of fighter, loyal, dedicated and hardworking workers of fellow parties of #MahaAlliance at its Lok Sabha Parliamentary constituency Munger.” (Translated from Hindi)
JD(U) had formed an alliance with RJD in August 2022 and left RJD to rejoin BJP in January 2024. Thus, the image of Lalan Singh was of the time when he was in the opposition.
Also, we found that Lalan Singh had hosted a lunch event in Suryagarha, Lakhisarai (his Munger constituency) after inaugurating development projects—where both vegetarian meals and a mutton feast were served—even during the holy month of Sawan, when many Hindus traditionally abstain from non‑veg food. The incident happened on July 16. This resulted in backlash from the opposition.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
