A video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being widely shared on social media. In the video, the PM can be heard allegedly saying, “There is only one mission: divide the society, divide the people and capture the throne.”
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “I started hating this guy after UGC.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is taken out of context. In the original video, PM Modi was taking a jibe at Congress.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that a longer version of the same video was shared by the official YouTube channel of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on October 5, 2024.
In the video, at around the 52:26-minute timestamp, PM Modi can be seen making the same statement. However, right before the statement, PM says, “Despite its failures, the Congress is still dreaming of forming the government. It knows its core vote bank will remain intact, but others may shift or get divided. Therefore, the Congress and its allies have one clear mission: divide society, divide people, and capture power.”
This context has been removed to make it look like he was making the statement rather than accusing Congress of dividing the country.
The PM’s statement further states, “We have to make our unity the shield of the nation. We must remember that if we allow ourselves to be divided, those who seek to divide us will celebrate. We cannot let the intentions of the Congress succeed.”
The caption associated with the video reads, “PM Modi inaugurates, lays foundation stone for development projects in Thane, Maharashtra.”
Hence, we can ascertain that in the viral video, PM Modi was taking a jibe at Congress.
The video clip was also shared by Aaj Tak on October 7, 2024.
The caption reads, “The PM said that Congress is India’s most dishonest and corrupt party. No matter the era or the state, Congress’s character remains unchanged. Just look at the past week. A Congress Chief Minister has been implicated in a land scam, one of his ministers is abusing and insulting women, and a Congress leader has been caught with drugs in Haryana.”
In this video, at around the 3:32-minute mark, we can hear PM Modi saying the same statement in the viral video about Congress wanting to divide society.
An excerpt from PM Modi’s speech was also shared by Aaj Tak on October 5, 2024. The report states that PM Modi was taking a jibe at Congress.
