A screenshot of a tweet purportedly made by Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi has gone viral.

The tweet in the screenshot reads, “India is a country of fools where the government spends crores of rupees not on drinking water for people but on the royal bath of hypocrites and frauds.” (Translated from Hindi) Those sharing the tweet claim it shows Priyanka Gandhi allegedly mocking the government for organising the Maha Kumbha Mela, even as people in India do not have access to clean water for drinking.

A Facebook user shared the purported tweet in a post with the caption, “See Priyanka Vadra’s tweet on Kumbh Mela. Chanakya was right. Children born from foreign wombs cannot be patriotic. Can we hand over the country to these traitors of religion?” (Translated from Hindi)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The tweet was not made by Priyanka Gandhi.

On closely observing the tweet, we found that it was shared from the X handle @PriyankagaINC. The original X handle of Priyanka Gandhi is @priyankagandhi, which has been the same since 2019.

We found that Priyanka Gandhi took oath as Wayanad MP on November 29, 2024. We scrolled through her X account checking for posts made after she took oath and found no such post by her.

We also found that the same screenshot was shared by an X user on February 9, 2019. Although we were not able to find the Twitter handle @PriyankagaINC, we conclude that the tweet was not made by Priyanka Gandhi.

Therefore, the claim is false.
