A video of people protesting on the streets is being widely shared on social media. The video is being shared with a caption claiming that it shows a recent protest in Idlib against Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, accusing him of being an ‘agent’ and demanding his departure.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Demonstrations in Idlib call on al-Julani to leave and accuse him of being an agent.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is misleading. The viral video is from 2022, and it shows a protest against Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham in Syria.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the viral video is from October 19, 2022. The video is shared with a caption that reads, “A mass demonstration took place near the Bab al-Salam border crossing with Türkiye, rejecting Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s entry into areas north of Aleppo.”
We further found that the viral video was also shared by a website, NABD, on October 18, 2022. The video was shared with a title that reads, “A mass demonstration took place near the Bab al-Salam border crossing with Türkiye, rejecting the entry of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham into areas north of Aleppo.”
We found that the incident was also reported by another website, Independent Arabia, on October 17, 2022. The report stated that intense clashes erupted in northern Aleppo following the collapse of a truce between opposition factions. Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and the Syrian National Army accused each other of reneging on the agreement’s terms.
Hence, we conclude that the viral post is misleading.
