The Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu government to remove sanitation workers who had been protesting outside the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Ripon Building for 13 days against the outsourcing of garbage collection in Zones V and VI.

In the above context, a video is widely being shared on social media in which some people are seen fleeing after seeing the police.

The video is shared on social media with a caption suggesting that it shows members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, protesting outside the municipal corporation of Chennai and fleeing after seeing the police.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “The court has ordered the police to remove the sanitation workers who are protesting in front of the Chennai Corporation - News. Following the court’s verdict, the DMK members who were at the protest site fled.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video shows a protest against the Waqf Amendment Act.

On a Google reverse image search, we found the same video was shared by a YouTube channel, News Tamil 24X7, on April 4. The video report suggests that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party members were protesting against the Waqf Amendment Act. Police arrested some volunteers for protesting without police permission, while others ran away.

We further found that the incident was also reported by CNN News 18 on April 4. According to the caption, “Actor Vijay’s TVK cadre protest against the passage of Waqf Bill; Tamil Nadu police detain them.”

According to another report published by DT Next on April 4, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded by actor Vijay, organised state-wide protests across Tamil Nadu (April 4) against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, calling it a threat to Muslims’ constitutional and property rights. Party president Vijay skipped the protest; N Anand led the action.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
