On February 15, a massive stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station resulted in at least 18 deaths and numerous injuries. The incident took place around 8 pm as thousands of passengers gathered to board trains heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
In the above backdrop, a video is being widely shared on social media in which Congress leader and leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi are seen paying a visit to the victims of the stampede.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that read, “Who is responsible for the deaths in the stampede at Delhi Railway Station – the opposition? The Prime Minister and the Railway Minister should resign as soon as possible. Respected Rahul Gandhi stands with the people of the country and the families of those who lost their lives in the Delhi tragedy.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video shows the Gandhi siblings visiting victims of Wayanad landslides in 2024.
On a Google reverse image search, we found the same video was shared by an X account on August 2, 2024. The video was shared with a caption that stated that it was of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visiting the families of the landslide victims in a hospital in Wayanad.
We found that the viral video was also shared by a YouTube channel on August 3, 2024, with a caption that reads, “Priyanka and Rahul arrived in Wayanad.”
The Indian Express also reported that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visited the victims of the Wayanad landslide, which killed over 277 people and injured over 200.
Moreover, while we saw reports of Rahul Gandhi expressing grief over the Delhi stampede, we found no reports of him visiting the Delhi stampede victims.
Therefore, we conclude that the viral claim is false.
