A video of men vandalising a roadside shop has gone viral. The video also shows police lathi-charging the same group.

The video is being shared with the claim that it is recent and shows quick vigilante-styled action by the Uttar Pradesh police on the goons who are Muslims.

A social media user shared the video and wrote, “A Very Satisfying Video! A Jihadi went on a rampage, breaking and hitting everyone and everything on his way but then police made their entry to hunt him down, and breaking his legs on the spot.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is old and showed police arresting law breakers in Pune, Maharashtra.

On a Google reverse image search, we found a screenshot of the same image shared by the Indian Express on December 30, 2022. The report associated with the claim stated that people of the so-called Koyta ganga were terrorising people by entering shops and demolishing roadside stalls while people fled in terror. The incident happened on the outskirts of Pune. The drama went on for around 20 minutes before marshals from Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station came to the spot and started beating the goons with a baton.

Taking a hint, we searched with relevant keywords and found that the same incident was also reported by the Pune Mirror on June 13, 2024. The video stated that the drama was unleashed in Hadaspar, on the outskirts of Pune, when the accused came to a paan shop called Raviraj Pan Shop and General Stores at Sadesatra Nali Chowk and demanded forty bottles of Sting cold drink. When the owner of the pan shop denied them, two minors from the gang attacked him with an iron machete and also vandalised his brother’s shop, damaging a tea-making machine and other items with the machete, causing significant loss.

The report further suggested that the police arrested four individuals, including Amol Jagannath Gadekar and three minors.

The incident was also reported by Mirror Now.

Therefore, we conclude that the viral claim is false.
