The 2025 Northeast India floods began in late May, with torrential monsoon rains causing severe flooding and landslides across Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
As of June 4, at least 44 people have died, and over 6.5 lakh residents have been displaced. Assam is the worst-hit, with more than 6.3 lakh affected across 21 districts. Manipur has seen over 1.6 lakh people impacted, with 44 relief camps set up in Imphal East and West. The collapse of National Highway 2 in Nagaland has cut off access to Manipur, stranding over 100 trucks. The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for continued heavy rainfall in the region.
In the above context, a video is widely being shared on social media in which we can see a flash flood resulting in the collapse of houses.
Many social media users are sharing the video with a caption suggesting that the viral video is from the recent flood in Assam.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Scary Scenes at Gauhati, Pray for Assam.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is old and is from Himachal Pradesh.
On a Google reverse image search, we found the same video was shared by a YouTube channel on September 9, 2024. The video was shared with a caption suggesting that the viral video is of a flood in Sainj Valley in Himachal Pradesh, which happened in 2023.
The video was also uploaded by another YouTube channel on October 19, 2024. The video also suggested that it was of a flood in the Sainj valley.
Another YouTube blog also shared a video of the Sainj flood, which happened in Himachal Pradesh on July 15, 2023. The video showed the destruction during the flood. It was shared with the caption that reads, “A flash flood in Sainj river (also known as Pin Parbati river) has caused massive destruction at Sainj under the Banjar subdivision of Kullu district on Sunday. As many as 40 shops and 30 residential houses were washed away in the flooded Sainj River at Sainj in Kullu on Sunday. But so far, no loss of life has been reported in this incident.”
We further found a report by The Indian Express, published on July 14, 2023. The report suggests that in July 2023, Himachal Pradesh’s Thunag and Sainj valleys experienced their second devastating flood in 11 months, damaging over 100 shops and 50 homes. Timely evacuations prevented casualties, but the communities face significant financial losses
While we could not ascertain that the viral video is of Sainj valley, we can ascertain that the viral video is old.
