A video has gone viral on social media in which a young man is seen assaulting a woman. Those sharing the video claim that the man is a Muslim assaulting his Hindu girlfriend.
A social media user shared the video (warning: disturbing visuals) claiming that the video is a case of ‘love jihad.’
SouthCheck found that the claim was false. We found that the video is from Malaysia and the attack is not communal.
On doing a Google reverse image search, we found screenshots of the viral video on a website published on November 1, 2022. The report suggested that the incident happened at a shopping mall in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in Malaysia and the couple in the video are siblings.
The screenshot and an associated report were also published by The New Paper on November 2, 2022. The report also had an X link embedded in it which contained the viral video.
The report quoted the Sabah police statement and said that they were investigating the matter. It further suggested that the people in the video are siblings and the boy was thrashing his sister as she left their sick mother and went to meet her boyfriend.
The Star also reported the incident and stated that the viral video was from Malaysia.
None of the reports stated that there was a religious angle to the assault. Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video has no communal angle to it.
