Hyderabad: A video of a little boy crying has gone viral on social media with the claim that the video describes the current situation in Gaza due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In the viral video, the boy with a white powder-like substance on his face can be heard crying for his sisters who passed away, as per the subtitles.

The Israel-Hamas war broke out in early October 2023, which led to a number of old videos of conflict in other parts of the world resurfacing on social media.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false.

One of the comments of the tweet said that the clip belongs to Syria and provided the link to a YouTube video for clarification.

The YouTube video had the same video titled in Arabic which stated that the video is from Syria, about a boy crying for his sister’s death. The video was published on October 19, 2014.

Taking this as a cue, we performed a reverse image search and found the extended version of the video on an Arabic YouTube channel named Aleppo Media Centre with the title in Arabic, which said “A child cries for his brothers who were killed in a helicopter bombing in the city of Masaken Hanano.” The video was published on February 14, 2014.

The video contained the viral clip at 0:56 seconds.

We also found screenshots of the viral video on Reuters dated February 14, 2014. The description of the video reads, “A man holds a baby saved from under the rubble, who survived what activists say was an airstrike by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Masaken Hanano in Aleppo February 14, 2014.” A boy wearing the same jacket is present in the Reuters photos too.

Since these sources are from 2014, we can at least confirm that the viral video is not from the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
